Saturday was the first time by MHSAA rules that Football teams throughout the state could put on pads and have a live scrimmage. They did so at 10:00 AM in front of about 100 on lookers trying to get a peek at the 2016 Chargers. Those looking on saw the offense struggling early. A bad snap, a QB sack, and turnover was not how Coach Ed Rich envisioned things starting. But things were corrected quickly as the First Team Offense lead by Tyler Moore broke off a couple first down runs and finished with a 20 yard touchdown run by the sophomore running back, Moore. Coach Rich praised the offensive line for they work during the drive. In the 3rd series Sophomore Quarterback Marseiluis Vaughn threw a nice touchdown in the back of the end zone over the top of the defense. However the defense got the last laugh as the scrimmage finished with the First Team Offense going against the First Team Defense. The energy level picked up as both sides of the ball sent out their best. It was back and forth until Safety Tyler Banger intercepted Vaughn in the end zone to end things. After the scrimmage Coach Rich stated, “We are about where we thought we would be. We saw some really good things and a lot of stuff we need to work on.” The Chargers will get another chance to work on things Friday night (8/12) against Lafayette before the regular season begins against Oxford the following week. Both games will be at home.
