Growing Pains was a TV sitcom in the 1980’s. It also is something that occurs when a team loses 4 senior starters. Erin Webb, Mindy Parnell, Chasity Johnson, and Kim Crider all played key roles for Coach Hale and the Lady Chargers Volleyball team last year and graduated last May. Thus the 2016 season began with some “Growing Pains”.
After jumping out to a 2 games to 1 lead on Lake Cormorant in the season opening match the Chargers lost the next 9 sets they played including the last 2 against Lake Cormorant then were swept by Oxford. They headed to the Kick it Off Classic this weekend in Ridgeland where they lost all 4 sets they played on Friday. That is definition of Growing Pains but the team didn’t just lay down and quit. They overcame!
They showed up Saturday and beat Jackson Prep and MRA without dropping a set. That put them in the finals of the consolation bracket against 6A foe Tupelo. Tupelo jumped out early and beat the Chargers 25-17 in the first set but the Chargers overcame again. They would dominate the 2nd set beating the Golden Wave 25-15. That set the stage for a first to 15 final set. The Chargers would rally and take the final set 15-13 and win the consolation bracket championship.
The Growing Pains might not be over but the Lady Chargers certainly are headed in the right direction. The Chargers are back in action Thursday at home against Senatobia.
