Last Saturday the Chargers cross country team traveled to New Albany for their season opener. It was a hot, humid morning for the Myrtle XC Invitational, and the runners tested their endurance on the 5k course at the New Albany Sportsplex. Spectators first lined the start for the girls’ race in which Southaven’s only female participant Erin Fritz ran a 26:18 for her first official 5k. Following her performance, the boys race featured returning senior CJ Nelson who led the way with a 19:05 for his 5k. His teammates Ontarius Woodland, Ben Barulli, TJ Blackmon, Detarion Childers, Miguel Echols, and Austin Hillenburg rounded out the scoring. Josh McPherson and Keegan Lancaster also made their first showing of the season. Next up, the Chargers will travel to Hickory Flat on September 10th.
