Boys Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball · Basketball Tips Off Season

Our Charger Basketball teams tipped off the season with some mixed results. The Girls and Boys Varsity clubs have begun the season with both a win and a loss. The Girls earned a 1 point victory over Byhalia to begin the season. While the Boys fell to Byhalia. The roles were reversed against Grenada just a few nights later as the Boys came away victorious and the Girls lost a close one.

The Girls were lead to victory over Byhalia by Tye Metcalf’s block at the end of the game and her 14 points. Erica Jones led the Chargers in scoring with 16. However against Grenada things didn’t work out as well for our Chargers as Grenada broke a tie game at 38 in the 4th with a basket to take the lead 40-38 and never gave the lead back winning 46-39. Erica Jones again led the Chargers in scoring with 14. Coach McMurphy pointed to a 3 point 2nd quarter performance as the difference, “We just missed some easy shots we normally make. The 2nd quarter definitely did us in tonight.” Girls will be back on the court November 15th at home against Byhalia again.

The Boys started slowly against Byhalia, scoring just 3 field goals in the 1st half, but fought back in the 2nd half cutting Byhalia’s lead to 7 with a few minutes to go but couldn’t overcome the big early deficit losing by a final of 73 – 59. TJ Martin did score 20 points in the loss leading the team in scoring. Against Grenada our Chargers started much stronger. Shot making and good team defense led to a 21-13 lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The lead was extended to 14 at half, 21 at the end of the 3rd and won by a final of 76-50. Tyler Hill led the way with 19 including 3 triples in a row in the 3rd quarter. Martin added 17, Tawayne Lockett 11, and James Richards 9. The boys are back in action Saturday against Columbus at Ponotoc.
