Boys Varsity Basketball, Girls Varsity Basketball · Chargers Get Big Wins in Sweep

The Chargers traveled across town tonight to play in their final district game prior to the district tournament.

The Lady Chargers took care of business first with a 53-35 victory over DC. Erica Jones led all scorers in the game with 23. The win secures the three seed in the district tournament where SHS will take on Horn Lake a week from Tuesday (2/14).

As mentioned in the article earlier this week, this game also meant a lot to the boys team. Following a close win in the match-up at home, the guys were clearly ready to play tonight.

Both teams seemed to play with a lot of nerves in the first quarter and each team had several turnovers. At the end of the first, the Chargers had a slight lead at 10-8.

Southaven then jumped out with an 8-1 run to start the second quarter forcing DC to call a timeout with 6:39 left in the half. The Chargers used tenacious defense and consistent drives to the basket on offense to grow their lead to 36-20 at the half.

The third quarter began in much the same way that the second quarter had. The Chargers full court pressure forced several more turnovers. After a 14-4 run to begin the quarter, SHS maintained a 54-32 lead at the end of three.

The boys then finished of DC in the fourth quarter and won the game 74-44. Brandin Echols led the Chargers with 16 points on the night.

The victory secures the three seed in the district tournament and a match-up with Horn Lake next Tuesday following the ladies game. Both games will be at Olive Branch.
