Boys Varsity Football · Southaven Wins in Home Opener

The Chargers picked up a win in their first home game of the season over the Jaguars of Holmes County Central by a final score of  17-0.

The Southaven defense looked stout in the early part of the game not allowing a first down until the Jaguars third possession. Meanwhile, the Chargers offense played well, scoring on their first chance with the ball. The Chargers drove nine plays and 61 yards capped off with a 24-yard touchdown pass from Micah Chillers to Jules Holley.

The offense began the second quarter with a scoring drive as well. Once again, the Chargers drove nine plays and 60 yards finished off with a 31-yard field goal by Bryan Valenzuela landing a 10-0 lead.

The Charger defense continued to hold strong for the remainder of the first half and only allowed four first downs for the half and 36 total yards.

The first drive of the second half was short and sweet. On just the third play from scrimmage, Chillers found a streaking Jaylen Armstrong in stride for a 60-yard touchdown extending the lead to 17-0.

Following an interception by the Jaguars on the following Charger possession, the defense came up huge with a four down stand from inside the five yard line. On four consecutive run plays, the defense stopped scoring attempts by Holmes County preserving the shutout thus far.

The offense struggled for the remainder of the third quarter and turned the ball over a couple times. The defense continued to hold up, though, and didn’t allow a single first down in the quarter.

Neither offense accrued many yards in the fourth quarter as penalties, turnovers, and good defense prevailed yielding a final score of 17-0.
