Chargers News · State Farm Scholar Athletes – January


The Ryan England-State Farm Female Scholar Athlete for January is Lataria Carter. Lataria is a senior member of the SHS basketball team. She has a 4.33 weighted-GPA and is currently ranked number 22 in her graduating class of 437. Lataria has also scored as high as a 25 on the ACT. Coach McMurphy said of Lataria, “Lataria has been the “glue” for this program as my first four year player since I took over.  She has always been one of the most dependable in attendance, attitude, and work ethic, which is how she earned her way into the rotation by her junior year.  She has had different roles from being a reserve off the bench to starting at various points throughout her career.  Lataria has maintained a positive attitude no matter her role and shown the younger girls how to stay even keel through any situation.  She’s a leader in the gym through her actions as well as vocally.  She was also strong in the classroom with a current 4.3 GPA.”

The Ryan England-State Farm Male Scholar Athlete for January is Kagan Church. Kagan is a senior member of the Archery team. He has a 4.05-weighted GPA, currently ranked in the top 17% of his graduating class. He has also scored as high as a 22 on the ACT. Coach Bruce said of Kagan, “Kagan has done an excellent job for us this year. He has worked hard to quickly improve and is often competing with others on the team to push each other to be better. I know I can count on Kagan to step up and take charge when leadership is needed.”
